Air Display® App Reviews

Catastrophic on WIFI

Very convenient to install and use However, catastrophic performaces over WIFI. to the point where it is simply unuseable May be better over ethernet, but to absolutely avoid if planning on using it over a WIFI network

Slow

Air Display is reliable. But slower that a remote control system as RDC and slower than a cable connection. This is fine for mirroring his display. This is not appropriate to work with 2 screens in sync, the delay of reaction is too disturbing.

Great idea but average performance

I intended to use this software to perform an extension monitor by my Macbook Pro 13 for my work PC (windows XP). Unfortunately the software and driver for Windows frozed plenty of times during installation until, after several uninstalls, I could execute it just to face the fact that the text string was broken and replaced by little squares (that way I am never sure what I am clicking). After a fell random clicks I could stablish the extension. The rendering of the additional screen is decent, besides some blur when you drag a window. The speed and refresh rate are the main problem, since you will never know the exact position of the content of the desktop until some trial and error placements. Another problem is that the app will only work with the native resolution of your mac; if you try different resolutions the windows based program will crash.

Very good integration with Mac OS X

This application offers an excellent human interface design. It is very well integrated with Mac OS X, in that it enables a secondary Mac as an external display, configured via System Preferences. The host Mac shows no Dock icon for Air Display, which is how it should be (an unobtrusive menu icon is available). The guest Mac shows a window that can be quickly set to full screen. The behavior of the application in each Mac when going to sleep is seamless: connection is lost upon sleep and reconnection is established when waking up. These nice touches make it a better application than competitor applications (some of which do not even support an iPad client). While image refresh quality is good, it could be an area for improvement in future releases.

I like it!

So far so good. I installed it on both my iMac and my MBP so I can add the 24" iMac screen as the extra screen to my MBP or vise versa. I havent seen any problems as of yet. There is a minor studder when you first drag something across but once it there everthing looks great. I also tryed dragging a movie playing in VLC to see how it would look and was suprised how well it performed. Cant wait for the iPad 2 to arrive in Canada so I can try this with their iPad APP. I only give it 4 stars because I think $15 would be a resonable price for this APP. Considering the IOS App is another $10. Maybe Ill wait for a sale!

Great!

It works great! However I have a PC and I cannot figure out how to connect my MBP to PC and use the PC as a 2nd monitor. I can only do the opposite (i.e. Mac as 2nd monitor to PC.)

Good, but slow on larger resolutions

Air Display is pretty good, its easy to set up and connect. Im hooking up an extra Cinema Display 23" with a 1920x1200 resolution, it struggles a little with a resolution that big. The mouse generally moves smoothly, but window resizing and moving is quite choppy. Im using 802.11n, same experience with wires through my Time Capsule. Its certainly still usable, but Id like to see some better optimization for larger resolutions.

Missing important feature?

Well it is a very good app but I cant seem to connect my Mac book pro to my windows 7 pc and use it as a 2nd monitor. I can do it the other way around. It is a real bummer as many people do not own many apple computers and have some windows pcs lying around which can be used for this purpose. Thanks

Wireless performance not so good

I installed today on my 21 inch iMac (8 GB ram, no other applications were running and network activity near zero). Very easy to setup and install. Then I downloaded the drivers for my 15" mac book running Lion OS… no problems finding and connecting to my iMac. Both computers and the wirless device within 6 feet range. Video performance was pretty slow over wireless connection. I tried running simple productivity tools (pages, numbers) and it would take approx. 2 seconds before clicks and typed characters showed up on my iMac monitor. Tried face time after that… terrible performance. Will try again over wired connection and post next update

Needs full screen Lion Support

It would be great to be able to swipe between this as an extended desktop and my other Spaces in Mission Control. Otherwise, this is a great app, and I use it all the time with my 27" iMac as a second monitor for my Windows 7 PC from work when I work from home occasionally.

Does not work with Lion on my MacBook Pro

I just bought this app, after buying it for my iPad. Now I learn that there is a list of Mac computers that this software does NOT work with. Mine is in the "doesnt work" list. Avatron claims it is due to an Apple bug, but this doesnt solve my problem. I would simply like my money back, because this should have been explained up front. How do I receive a refund?

Amazing!!!

I give the application 4/5 because you are not able to have two screens running at the same time. For example I purchased the iOS and this OSX application. I thought I would be able to use the Macbook and iPad at the same time to support my PC / iMac (giving me 3 screens in total) but this functionality is not yet in place (no estimated completion date on their site but they did say they are working on it.) This application just saved me from purchasing an additional monitor and works like a charm. Easy install and northing can touch the Macbook Air + iPad combo when working out of office (iOS application not this version). Thanks for the great software!

Waste of money!!!!

Bought it to try and mirror my mac with Apple TV. In theory in worked but its so slow displaying to my ipad its unusable. It costs $20 for the app on your mac but they dont tell you you need to download the app for your iPad as well, which costs $10. Then I ran into an issue where my macs login screen would only display in 1024X768. After looking into found out that others had experienced the same issue and fixed it by uninstalling Air Dsplay. Dont buy it, I want my money back.

Can’t you at least tell what is also required to run on iOS?

Bought this pricey app without being told I need to run iOS 6 to install Air Display 2 on my iPad first generation. Wasted $20.

More trouble than it’s worth.

Mirroring displays is one of the most useful tools available out there today. Great technology that can seriously enhance productivity. Unfortunately this application fails on most levels. Not only is it too slow to even be worth having two screens, the second display is extremely choppy and nearly impossibly to scroll effectively. Don’t get too excited about having one display showing a video of some kind while you are working or writing on the other screen because it fails at that too. Displaying videos is always completely out of sync. You could disconnect one display temporarily but than when you reconnect to air display it requires adjustments to get it back to the way you want. The developers do a good job buttering this app up but you are much better trying to spend the additional cash to get a more effective dual display connection. If you were wondering if the quality of computers matters, it doesn’t. I am using a brand new 2.7 Ghz iMac with a 2.3 ghz macbook pro. Two exteremely expensive computers. This application is nothing but a waste of time.

Performance Unusable :-(

I was really hoping this app would allow me to use my iMac as a second display for my new MacBook. Unfortunately the performance over WiFi was unusable even with no additional network traffic. The mouse stutters so much i could barely click on anything. This is with regular apps, something like video or animation would be completly out of the question. Even with no apps open, moving the mouse around is super jumpy and glitchy and I have a very fast high end wifi router. I don’t have this issue with VNC or other connections over my WiFi, this is specific to this application. I liked the iPad version, but was very dissapointed in the OS X version. I DO hope they continue to improve this app, because the idea is fantastic.

Good idea… weak execution

Installed it yesterday. When it works… interesting. Usually stops functioning within a half hour. Needs to be restarted frequently. Using it with the latest iMac 21.5 and late 2010 MacBook Pro with max memory and Lion. Going to buy an external monitor today. LOL!

Lion 対応状況について(2011-08-31)

Avatron のサイトにも以下の通り明記されていますが、一部のマシンではまだ Lion 対応できていません。 ご注意を。 --- IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT AIR DISPLAY ON LION The Air Display host software runs well on Lion, but has this limitation: the built-in video driver on certain 2008 and 2009 Macs is incompatible with third-party video drivers. You can still install the Air Display host software, but until Apple fixes the issue, the Air Display drivers will disable themselves on Lion on these specific machines. Affected machines include: 13" MacBook (aluminum late 2008, early, mid, and late 2009) 13" MacBook Air (late 2008, mid 2009) 13" MacBook Pro (mid 2009) 15" MacBook Pro (late 2008, 2.53 GHz mid 2009, mid 2009) 17" MacBook Pro (early and mid 2009). 20" iMac (early or mid 2009) 24" iMac (early 2009) 21.5" iMac (late 2009) Mac mini (early or late 2009, Server late 2009) Mac mini Mac OS X Server (late 2009) Apple is aware of the bug. We are hopeful that they will release a fix soon.

BEWARE ! No mention of the lack of support on iOS 3.1.3

Dont be cheated. The Features section says "Your computer and the iOS device must be connected to the same local network...", but the lack of iOS 3.1.3 support is stated nowhere, including their web site... Trashed twenty dollars...

Do what promise but very bad

no Windows Aero support no support for 2 mac monitor no support for controlling windows with mac mouse/Keyboard for the windows real monitor 15 euros lost.
